Schools Councillor Meeting 4 November 2003

Schools Councils throughout Derbyshire were invited to send delegates to a Schools Conference at Pride Park Stadium - home of Derby County Football Club - on Tuesday November 4.

The club's then manager George Burley and some players attended the afternoon session of the full-day conference during which delegates were able to hear and exchange new ideas with the club. The experience also gave students an improved awareness of citizenship.

The conference was promoted by the Derby County Community Partnership.

Individual secondary schools were invited to send a teacher and between two and four delegates aged 11-18 to the conference. Ideally the delegates were to be Rams fans, but this was not essential - the DCCP is keen to forge links with all elements of the community it serves.

The conference helped forge stronger links between Derby County and Derbyshire schools to the benefit of all parties.

The five topics arising from the conference were:
    - Comments & suggestions about a Youth Council for DCFC
    - The match day experience; some ideas and suggestions
    - Suggestions (after the guided tour of Pride Park Stadium)
    - Derby County Football Club in the City and in the County
    - Uses for the 'void' under the South West Stand

You can see what ideas the pupils came up with by taking a look at our summary of the day.

Comments passed by teachers at the event include:

"Great opportunity for students to interact and communicate with other students and DCFC. Some of my students would never normally experience an event like this."

"Personally I appreciate the effort DCFC take to involve Derbyshire schools - and I wonder how many other clubs would take such time and effort, especially in terms of management and senior staff."

"My students were chosen from the school council, but 3 out of the 4 deserved the chance to experience something special as a 'pick me up' due to trying times."

"The students initially seemed totally in awe of it all, they felt very special and extremely excited about the tickets in their packs."

"An excellent day - thank you! I hope I get the chance to bring students in the future."
